Gemifloxacin is an antibiotic in a group of drugs called fluoroquinolones (flor-o-KWIN-o-lones). Gemifloxacin fights bacteria in the body.

Gemifloxacin is used to treat different types of bacterial infections in the lungs.

    Some of the side effects that can occur with gemifloxacin may not need medical attention. As your body adjusts to the medicine during treatment these side effects may go away. Your health care professional may also be able to tell you about ways to reduce or prevent some of these side effects. If any of the following side effects continue, are bothersome or if you have any questions about them, check with your health care professional:

    Acid or sour stomach
    bad, unusual, or unpleasant taste
    difficulty having a bowel movement (stool)
    dizziness or lightheadedness
    dryness or soreness of the throat
    feeling of constant movement of self or surroundings
    muscle aching or cramping
    pain in the joints
    redness of the face, neck, arms, and occasionally, upper chest
    sudden sweating
    trembling or shaking of the hands or feet
    voice changes

    Treating certain bacterial infections. It may be used in combination with other medicines to treat acne or certain amoeba infections. It may be used to prevent certain types of malaria in travelers who will be visiting malaria-infected areas for less than 4 months. It may also be used to prevent or slow the progression of anthrax after exposure. Doryx delayed-release capsules are a tetracycline antibiotic. It works by slowing the growth of bacteria. Slowing the bacteria's growth allows the body's immune system to destroy the bacteria.
