Atovaquone is a medication that interferes with the reproduction of protozoa (single-cell organisms) that can cause disease in the body.

Atovaquone is used to treat or prevent pneumonia caused by a fungal infection called Pneumocystitis carinii (also called Pneumocystis jiroveci).

    You should check with your doctor immediately if any of these side effects occur when taking atovaquone:

    More common:
    Cough or hoarseness
    difficult or labored breathing
    fever or chills
    lower back or side pain
    painful or difficult urination
    tightness in the chest
    Incidence not known:
    Black, tarry stools
    bleeding gums
    blood in the urine or stools
    bluish-colored lips, fingernails, or palms
    dark urine
    dizziness or lightheadedness
    fast heartbeat
    large, hive-like swelling on the face, eyelids, lips, tongue, throat, hands, legs, feet, or sex organs
    light-colored stools
    loss of appetite
    noisy breathing
    pains in the stomach, side, or abdomen, possibly radiating to the back
    pale skin
    pinpoint red spots on the skin
    rapid heart rate
    sore throat
    unusual bleeding or bruising
    unusual tiredness or weakness
    yellow eyes or skin
    Severity: Minor
    Some of the side effects that can occur with atovaquone may not need medical attention. As your body adjusts to the medicine during treatment these side effects may go away. Your health care professional may also be able to tell you about ways to reduce or prevent some of these side effects. If any of the following side effects continue, are bothersome or if you have any questions about them, check with your health care professional:

    Abdominal or stomach pain
    lack or loss of strength
    runny nose
    skin rash
    sore mouth or tongue
    stuffy nose
    trouble sleeping
    white patches in the mouth, tongue, or throat
    Incidence not known:
    Blistering, peeling, or loosening of the skin
    eye irritation or redness
    itching or skin rash
    joint or muscle pain
    red skin lesions, often with a purple center
